JOE’s 5 go-to gigs in Ireland this week (September 23-30)

The best of the live music gigs in Ireland

Eric Lalor

The best of the live music gigs in Ireland.

Who: Seekae
Date: Wednesday, September 23rd
Where: Whelan’s, Dublin

Aussie electro-pop indie heads, Seekae bring their live show to Dublin this Wednesday night. They’ve won album and single of the year back in their native Australia.

These lads are the real deal and it’ll probably be the last time you will get to see them in such an intimate setting as Whelan’s.

Who: Boomtown Rats
Date: Sunday, December 6th
Where: Olympia Theatre, Dublin

Tickets go on sale this Thursday morning for a live show from the legendary Boomtown Rats. Bob Geldof and the lads will be gracing the famous old venue on Dame Street in December.

After wowing revellers at the recent Electric Picnic festival, the Rats will be doing something of a homecoming reunion gig in December featuring classics like this:

Who: Ewan Dobson
Date: Friday, September 25th
Where: Kavanagh’s, Portlaoise

Ewan Dobson is described as a fingerstyle guitarist which kind of baffles us as we were under the impression that most guitarists play with their fingers.

I digress. Ewan Dobson is one of the best in the world at what he does and anyone who can be labelled as doing ‘acoustic metal’ is alright by us. Go and check him out in the wonderfully intimate setting of Kavanagh’s in Portlaoise and thank us later.

Who: The Minutes
Date: Saturday, September 26th
Where: The Pav, Cork.

Dublin rockers The Minutes never fail to deliver anything other than a proper good sweaty night of brilliant rock ‘n’ roll when they perform live.

They visit the Rebel County this Saturday night for a show at The Pav and you’d be nuts not to go along and see why they’ve been chosen to tour with the likes of The Cult, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, The Strokes and Supergrass.

Who: Maverick Sabre
Date: Saturday, November 21st
Where: The Academy, Dublin

Another gig coming up in the next couple of months, but the tickets have just gone on sale. The Londoner who lived most of his life in Wexford is a frequent visitor to these shores as a performer and his gig in the Academy will be a special night.

One of the unique voices in the business, catch him live at the Academy in November.

And one extra for good measure….

Who: Battle for the Burning Lake
Date: September 25 – 27
Where: Achill Island

Billed as the final music festival of the summer, Battle for the Burning Lake is a watersports and music festival way out west on Achill Island. Headliners include The Eskies, Amazing Apples and Daithí.

If that wasn’t enough, on the final night they’re only going to go and set Lough Keel alight. Twisted firestarters.

Night time costs €25 per night or weekend tickets for only €40. Tickets available from Pure Magic stores or theticketfairy.com
