JOE’s Song Of The Day #625: State Lights – ‘Freedom’

Rudi Kinsella

Song of the day

The nostalgic video shows the journey of coming to terms with one’s sexuality.

The lads are back with a brand new song, and it’s a damn good one.

‘Freedom’ is an infectiously catchy song about moving on past heartbreak, which is depicted in the video.

The video itself shows the band’s frontman’s relationship with a boy in his life through a series of flashbacks.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the video is when we see a scene from Phil Lynott’s video for ‘Old Town’, where a couple share a passionate kiss. ‘Freedom’ sees that same couple sharing a similar kiss 32 years later.

The song itself has an 80s alt-rock sound to it, while also having a modern, catchy feel.

The lead singer of the band, Shobsy, said that: “The video attempts to help others who may have experienced a similar struggle in their lives.”

Give the song a listen and give the video a watch. We guarantee that you’ll be reminded of the Ireland of old, while also seeing how far we’ve come.
