Noel Gallagher talks about his love for Mayo and U2

A cracking interview on Desert Island Discs

A cracking interview on Desert Island Discs.

Whenever you’re listening to a Noel Gallagher interview there are always a few things to keep in mind. 1) The former Oasis guitarist is never dull, 2) he sometimes talks utter crap in order to get his name in print and 3) he’s easily one of the best interviewees alive.

The High Flying Birds frontman sat down with BBC Radio 4 presenter Kirsty Young on her Desert Island Discs’s show and it’s one of the best interviews that he has ever given because Noel was happy to talk about fame, fatherhood, his relationship with Liam, the love of a good woman and some of his favourite tunes.

Naturally, his love of all things Mayo and U2 also came up as seen in this transcript.

Kirsty Young: You said that your happiest childhood memories were the six weeks that you spent every year in County Mayo in Charlestown.

Noel: Yes and it’s as rural as you can imagine, for one time I didn’t even have electricity and we loved it. Some uncle would always drive us there from Manchester in a car. He would drive from Manchester to Hollyhead and this is true, when we got to the ferry, they used to put all the children on the floor and cover us up with a blanket, just so we didn’t have to pay. Our summers seemed endless there, just brilliant.

Noel on U2: The Joshua Tree, at the time of its release, some people just thought that it was another record but you listen to it now and honestly, it’s easily one of the greatest batches of songs that any band have ever written. I love U2 and if you don’t get it then you don’t get it and shame on you for not. With or Without You is one of the greatest songs ever written.
