Video: The songs that every Irish person was listening to 20 years ago

An eclectic mix

Paul Moore

An eclectic mix.

We’re always striving to bring you the best new music but there’s a lot to be said for turning the volume up on some retro classics.

1995 was an eclectic year for music and I’ve decided to gather a healthy mix of the cheesy, classic and cheerful tunes that Irish people were listening to on their walkman at the time.

Now that’s what I call a blast from the past!

Now1995

Blur – Country House

Do you remember where you were when the news broke that this topped Roll With It?

Shaggy – Bombastic

Proof that adverts for jeans have a sway on the musical taste of Ireland.

Celine Dion – Think Twice

It spent nine weeks at the top of the Irish charts. Nine weeks people. You know who you are.

Smashing Pumpkins – 1979

Arguably the standout track from one of the best albums of that decade.

Coolio – Gangster’s Paradise

Four weeks at the top of the Irish charts. More memorable than ‘Dangerous Minds’ anyway.

Pulp – Common People

A staple of Indie bars everywhere. Do you remember Jarvis Cocker and Michael Jackson at the Brits?

Montell Jordan – This is How We Do It

This song still draws a crowd to the floor whenever it’s played. Rightfully so, I should add.

The Outhere Brothers –  Boom Boom Boom

The song that made Jason Sherlock’s career… apart from his natural ability on the pitch of course.

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees

It’s just a little bit special.

Alanis Morissette – You Oughta Know

It’s not ironic that we went for this choice. It’s just my favourite track from a famous album.

Skee-Lo – I Wish

€1 to anyone that can name me another one of his songs in the next three seconds. Didn’t think so. This is still a jam though.

Simply Red – Fairground

As a Manchester United fan, it pains me to see him named as one of our most famous fans. And yes, it was a number one in Ireland.

Seal – Kiss from a Rose

It was a choice of this or U2 from the Batman Forever soundtrack. I think I made the right choice.

Alright – Supergrass

The college anthem for going out and having a good time. It still sounds like it was recorded yesterday.

Mike and the Mechanics – Over My Shoulder

One of those strange tracks that everyone knows the lyrics to but still can’t picture the face of the singer. Here’s the video to help you out.

Runaway – The Corrs

Jim will be happy with this inclusion.

Deftones – 7 Words

I’ll be honest, I just threw this track into the list to mess with your head, plus it’s fun to see The Corrs next to Deftones. Truth be told, it’s a cracking track from one of my favourite bands. Anger, anger and anger.

Oasis – Wonderwall

Wasn’t this the national anthem of 1995?

Take That – Never Forget

The final song of every Irish wedding. Every. Single. One.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
