WATCH: Hermitage Green played a full live gig at a house party in UCD

Conor Heneghan

And they could be coming to a house party at your college real soon.

Limerick-based band Hermitage Green barely need an introduction.

One of the biggest bands in the country, they’ve performed to sold-out venues throughout Ireland and the UK and after six years together, they released their debut album, Save Your Soul, in March of this year.

We happen to be big fans and have had them in for JOE sessions on a couple of occasions, including a Christmas special.

Given their status, you can imagine the buzz that went around UCD yesterday when it emerged that they were going to play a live gig at a house party hosted by Fintan Ryan, one of seven members of a group of Hermitage Green fans known as ‘The Renegades’.

The group was named after the Hermitage Green song of the same name and for the record, the remaining members are Kevin O’Connor, Ross Barry, James O’Riordain, Charlie O’Kelly, Andy Mackey and Hugh Gray.

The gig came about after another member of ‘The Renegades,’ Ross Barry, got chatting to the band after a recent gig in Cork he attended with his girlfriend, Jane.

After randomly suggesting the idea of the band performing at a house party, he was delighted to discover that they were well up for it, telling Ross to get 20 or so people together and they’d do the rest.

This wasn’t just a couple of lads playing acoustic guitar either; they brought all of their equipment with them and played for a good half hour in scenes reminiscent of the music video for ‘1979’ by the Smashing Pumpkins.

The gig, as you can see above, was streamed on Hermitage Green’s Facebook page on Tuesday evening.

Fintan’s girlfriend, Jenny Kennedy, told us that the band “could not have been more craic”.

“They were amazing,” she said.

If you liked what you saw and fancy recreating something similar at a college gaff near you, then the band are soliciting invitations. As they say themselves: “It’s great craic and we don’t have real jobs.”

Alternatively, you can go see them at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin on November 4.

Cheers to Jenny Kennedy for sending this our way. Got a story for JOE? Hit us up on Facebook or Twitter, send it to our WhatsApp number 087-4001102 or mail [email protected].
