New statistics show that one in 20 motorist holding a driving licence in Ireland have been caught drink driving over the last 10 years.

The figures which have been compiled by the Irish Independent state that 51 out of 1,000 motorists have been found driving under the influence, but the figure is much higher in certain counties.

Here’s a list of the number of people arrested for drink driving in each county in Ireland over the last 10 years:

Kerry – 4,743
Kildare – 4,989
Kilkenny – 2,267

Louth – 4,436
Mayo – 3,512
Meath – 4,773
Monaghan – 3,673
Offaly – 1,888
Roscommon – 1,272
Sligo – 1,755

Waterford – 3,875
Westmeath – 3,343
Wexford – 4,322
Wicklow – 3,544

You obviously have to take the population in each county into consideration when reading those figures.

A further breakdown of the numbers shows that Monaghan had the highest rate of drink driving detections, 98 out of every 1,000 drivers were caught, that’s almost twice the national average.

On the other hand, the lowest number of drink driving detections was in Roscommon where 32 out of every 1,000 drivers have been caught.
