No-deal Brexit will increase food prices “virtually instantaneously”, according to Bird’s Eye

Not the fish fingers. Anything but the fish fingers.

As each day goes by, we seem to be given another bit of negative news that the world will have to deal with in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

As recently as Sunday morning, it was announced that the UK’s richest man was said to be planning to leave the country to avoid up to £4 billion in tax.

But now, we’ve got some real issues to deal with.

Bird’s Eye – the good folk behind delicious fish fingers and potato waffles – have said that a no-deal Brexit would result in an increase in their prices “virtually instantaneously.”

In an article in The Grocer magazine, Wayne Hudson, Bird’s Eye managing director for the UK and Ireland ominously said that:

“There is now a dense fog and a serious sense of unease that the entire food industry is having to navigate.

“Here at Birds Eye, we are the strongest we have been in years.

“However, instead of focusing all our energy on making this business even better, an increasing and considerable amount of people and financial resource is being dedicated to Brexit contingency planning and ensuring continuity of supply.”

Dismissing reports that have claimed that food prices would increase were simply “scaremongering”, Hudson said: “The brutal fact is that, if we leave the EU without a deal, food prices will increase virtually instantaneously as WTO tariffs would apply.”

This isn’t the first time that a major food company has made this promise.

Only two weeks ago, we saw UK’s biggest food retailers pen a letter that warned that a no-deal Brexit would risk food security.
