He’s at it again.

The UK is on the verge of making a historic mistake if it does not “junk the backstop”, according to Boris Johnson.

Speaking at the DUP conference in Belfast on Saturday, Johnson said the UK had allowed Northern Ireland to become an indispensable bargaining chip in the negotiations with the EU.

Johnson, who campaigned vocally for the Leave side, warned that Theresa May’s proposed deal would leave the UK “a satellite state” and separate out Northern Ireland, leaving it “an economic semi-colony of the EU.”

“Unless we junk this backstop, we are going to find that Brussels has got us exactly where they want us: a satellite state,” Johnson told the assembled crowd.

According to The Sun, Johnson also said the deal will result in Northern Ireland being rebranded as a new country.

“We are actually witnessing the birth of a new country called UK-NI or Ukni,” he said.

“Ukni is in large part to be ruled by Brussels.

“Unless we change course we are going to stay in the customs union, the single market, we are going to be rule takers.”
