Boris Johnson wants a mutiny in Britain over Theresa May’s Brexit plan

Another day, another controversial line from Boris Johnson.

Boris Johnson has claimed Theresa May is on the brink with the EU over Brexit and he urged the Cabinet to mutiny against the Prime Minister’s withdrawal plan.

The former British foreign minister accused her of forcing through a deal to keep the country locked in the EU’s customs union in a “total surrender”.

Johnson made the comments in his Telegraph column, where he urged Theresa May to abandon her Chequers plan in favour of a deal similar to Canada’s free-trade deal.

“I really can’t believe it but this government seems to be on the verge of total surrender,” he wrote in his column.

“I want you to savor the full horror of this capitulation… we are on the verge of signing up for something even worse than the current constitutional position. These are the terms that might be enforced on a colony.”

He expressed his belief that even if the government was given a way to negotiate a unilateral end to the backstop arrangement (if you’re not sure what the backstop is, here’s a really good explainer), he doesn’t think they’re capable of doing so.

“The awful truth is that even if the Cabinet mutinies – as they ought – it will make little difference,” Johnson wrote.

“Even if we agree with the EU that the UK must have a unilateral break clause, so that we can go our own sweet way at a time of our own choosing, it is irrelevant because the programme and ambition of the Government is to remain in captivity, to stay in our cell, even if we are given the theoretical key to escape.”

His words come days after British Transport Minister Jo Johnson, Boris’ brother, quit the UK government and called for a second referendum.
