“You were a genuine fella and I will miss you.”
Tributes have flooded in for a father-of-three who was killed in the early hours of Sunday after being struck by a car while walking along a road in Cork.
John Barry was struck by a vehicle at around 1.30am on, on the N25 Cork-to-Waterford road close to Midleton.
Despite emergency services arriving within minutes of the incident, the 45-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be taken to Cork University Hospital.
In a statement to JOE, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 1:30am on Sunday 7th April 2024 on the N25 Eastbound at Water-Rock in Midleton, County Cork.
“The pedestrian, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other serious injuries to persons was reported.
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N25 Eastbound between 1:15am and 1:30am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021 4621550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
Tributes paid to Cork father-of-three struck by car while walking along road
Friends and family of Mr Barry paid tribute to the “one of a kind” father from Cork.
One tribute posted on social media, read: “what can I say, only shocked when I got the -phone call in the early hours of this morning. I don’t even know what to say.
“Look down on your family, Stacey and your children and your uncle Thomas, your best buddy. You were a genuine fella and I will miss you. Sleep tight.”
Another wrote: “This all just doesn’t seem real to me. I’m writing this with a heavy heart this morning. Rest in peace to my Uncle John Barry. It just doesn’t seem real. Please watch over us but especially your kids and Stacey. I love you forever and always.”
A third tribute read: “Can’t believe I woke this morning to the news that my best friend passed away last night. I am absolutely heartbroken John.
“I’ll miss the phone calls and videos we send everyday to each other. I miss you load bud. You’ve a heart of gold. It’s really true what they say God does take the best cause there isn’t a bad thing anyone can say about you. You are one of a kind who will be sadly missed. RIP John, I love you forever buddy.”
The past weekend saw another slew of road-related deaths, with two other people dying in separate incidents in Dublin and Wicklow in the space of just 12 hours over the weekend.
The total deaths on the road so far this year is now at 61.
