Elderly man killed in Cork hospital attack named

The incident occurred at the weekend.

89-year-old Matthew Healy has been named as the victim of the Cork hospital attack at the weekend.

It is understood that Mr. Healy died after being attacked by another patient at Mercy University Hospital Cork.

The incident occurred in the hospital on Sunday, 22 January shortly after 5.30 am.

The Journal reports that Mr. Healy was a retired farmer from Berrings in Cork and that he sadly lost his wife earlier this month.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene of the incident on Sunday morning and is being detained at Bridewell Garda Station in Cork.

He is being held under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

According to The Journal, both staff and other patients witnessed the horrifying attack.

Those affected by the incident have been offered counseling.

A Garda liaison officer is also supporting Mr. Healy’s family during this harrowing time.

A post-mortem has been conducted and the hospital ward has been sealed off.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation into Mr. Healy’s death.

They confirmed that details of the post-mortem are not being released for operational reasons.

Gardaí also confirmed that a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed.
