DCU students fight back in their thousands against rise in accommodation prices

The prices that are being thrown around are absolutely ludicrous.

If you have attended DCU, or know anyone that has, you will have definitely heard of Shanowen.

It’s the ideal place to get student accommodation, if you’re a student in the college. It’s directly across from the campus, and normally has quite a good reputation.

It is normally a source of great happiness and convenience for DCU students. But the recent news of a drastic increase in the cost of rent has left a number of students in a serious spot of bother.

Students were recently informed when applying for accommodation of a 27% increase in the price of some of their apartments, with the most expensive costing up to €10,000 per nine-month lease.

This news comes a day after MyHome.ie published a report stating that the price of houses in Dublin increased by 11.1% in 2017, on average.

Naturally, this news wasn’t well received by DCU students, and has even led to the Students Union stepping in and releasing a powerful statement, which includes the line “Everybody has to play their part for education in Ireland, and these students are part of our community, and should not be burdened for simply accessing education.”

You can read the statement in full below.

At the time of writing, nearly 6,000 people have signed a petition in an attempt to stop the price increase in a bid to make student accommodation as affordable as possible.

A link to the petition can be found here.
