A legacy completely tarnished
Former Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey has pleaded guilty to 10 charges of defrauding individuals by falsely claiming he had cancer in order to obtain money.
The 54-year-old entered the guilty pleas during an appearance at Ireland’s Circuit Court, where he had been scheduled to go on trial.
Carey, a five-time All-Ireland champion, is regarded as one of the most successful and celebrated players in hurling history.
He admitted to dishonestly persuading people to give him money by fraudulently claiming he was suffering from cancer and needed funds for treatment.
The court was told that one charge of deception would be withdrawn, while the remaining counts would be considered by the judge during sentencing.
He was honoured as Hurler of the Year in 2000 and earned nine All-Star awards over the course of his career. Following his retirement from playing, he went on to manage the Kilkenny U21 team and served as a selector for the county’s senior side.
He was remanded on bail and is due to be sentenced on October 29th.
