A viral clip captures the moment when a plane touched down sideways on the airport runway before retreating to the air.

Several videos have been posted on social media highlighting the impact of Storm Kathleen on planes at Dublin Airport today (Saturday, 6 April).

Earlier today, JOE wrote about how at least three dozen Aer Lingus flights to and from Dublin Airport had been cancelled as the storm landed in Ireland.

Due to the storm, Met Éireann issued a Status Yellow wind warning for all of Ireland, as well as separate Status Orange wind warnings for the counties Cork, Galway, Kerry, Mayo and Waterford.

As part of its alerts, the Irish meteorological service said that the impacts of the weather conditions could include “difficult travel conditions”.

Then on Saturday afternoon, Dublin Airport published a Storm Kathleen update which stated that despite the scrapping of some flights, its operations “continue to move well”.

It then added: “Strong gusts in the middle part of Saturday morning at Dublin Airport resulted in some incoming aircraft having to circle the airfield for a short period before landing, with one inbound flight from Dallas making the decision to divert to Paris.”

The unusual conditions have led to some aviation enthusiasts keeping an eye on the aircraft comings and goings on the runway, with some managing to capture some jaw-dropping footage.

For instance, the page EU Plane Spotters posted a clip of the “scary” moment when a plane touched down sideways at the airport before retreating to the air.

Another similar viral video shot by Paul McNulty shows a plane coming very close to the runway before deciding to abort its landing.

Dublin Airport also said in its statement: “Passengers due to fly later today are advised to check directly with their airline for updates regarding their flight.”
