A good spot for a pint.

Everyone will have their take on where the best pub in Ireland is located. However, it’s now been made official at the Irish Restaurant Awards and the award has gone to Thomas Connolly’s in Sligo.

Located on Holborn Street, Thomas Connolly’s pub was first licensed in 1861 and is the oldest pub in Sligo. Specialising in whiskeys, the pub even has its own single cask whiskeys.

The pub was awarded the honour at the event which saw around 1,200 restaurant and hospitality business owners and staff in attendance on Monday.

The Sligo establishment was up against the likes of T Morris Bar in Wexford, the Maghera Inn in Down, Friel’s Pub in Clare and Dublin’s Walsh’s in Stoneybatter.

Among the other winners on the night include Chapter One, which was announced the best restaurant in Ireland. The Dirty Duck in Holywood, Co. Down also won best gastropub.

Speaking at the Irish Restaurant Awards All Ireland Final, President of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Paul Lenehan, said; “Now in their 14th year, the Irish Restaurant Awards returns with a record-breaking number of public nominations – over 130,000. This sheer number of votes highlights the support & appreciation by the general public for our hospitality sector and all who contribute to it.

The Awards continue to showcase the incredible food that is on offer in the cafes, hotels, pubs and restaurants of Ireland. As an industry, the restaurateurs, pub-owners and entrepreneurs of Ireland, continue to defy the odds.”
