€367,000 worth of Khat seized at Dublin Airport

A major drugs seizure at Dublin Airport.

Gardaí have seized 737 kilograms of the drug khat at Dublin Airport, according to a statement issued on Friday (6 March). Following investigations into drug trafficking, a joint operation involving Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and Revenue’s Customs Service made the discovery yesterday. The drugs have an estimated street value of €367,000, pending analysis. No arrests have been made to date, according to a spokesperson for the Gardaí. The long-term effects of khat include:

• Risk of mouth infections
• Insomnia
• May increase risk of heart disease and cancer of the mouth
• May cause anxiety and aggression
• If you already have mental health problems khat can make them worse.
