Eamon Ryan confirms public transport will return to 100% capacity next week

He said that a lot of the legislation governing Covid-19 restrictions will also be removed soon.

Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has said that public transport will return to 100% capacity next week. Public transport is currently operating at 75% capacity due to current Covid-19 restrictions, however, it is set to ramp-up to full capacity from next week. Speaking on RTÉ's This Week programme on Sunday, Ryan said that there would be a series of phased removals of coronavirus restrictions starting in September which will begin with the increasing of public transport capacity. He added that the change would be implemented ahead of the returns of schools and colleges which are set to return from next week, with many workers also likely to see a return to offices in September. Ryan said that certain public health measures such as masks will continue to be necessary as restrictions continue to ease, including on public transport. "We can police ourselves without having to have overly strict structures," he said. Ryan also said that the legislation governing Covid-19 restrictions would soon be out of date, adding that it is unlikely that Government will extend the legislation again. Cabinet is set to meet to discuss the further easing of Covid-19 restrictions on Tuesday, with the reopening of live entertainment, also thought to be on the cards.
