Five new Covid-19 deaths confirmed, 611 new cases

This is the highest daily case total since the end of April.

Five new Covid-19 related deaths have been confirmed, as well as 611 new cases.

There are currently 156 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in hospitals across the country, with 25 confirmed cases in the ICU.

Out of Wednesday’s cases, 218 are in Dublin, 63 are in Cork, 60 in Donegal, 35 in Galway, 31 in Kildare, and the remaining 204 are spread across 20 counties.

On this day last week, the 14-day incidence of Covid-19 in the Republic of Ireland was 88.5, while today it is at 124 per 100,000.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer said that there are at least six new Covid-19 outbreaks in nursing homes across the country, with five open clusters that have more than 20 cases.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said: “We are deeply concerned about the changing path of this infection.”

Professor Philip Nolan said: “If we fail to reduce viral transmission nationwide immediately, we could see 1,100-1,500 cases per day and 300-450 people in hospital by November 7.”

Earlier on Wednesday it was reported that 828 new cases were confirmed in Northern Ireland.

There has been 4,417 confirmed cases in the North in last seven days, compared to 3,113 in the Republic.
