Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has resigned.
Johnson, who was a key figure in the Brexit campaign, has resigned his post less than 24 hours after the resignation of Brexit Secretary David Davis.
Both are said to be displeased by Prime Minister Theresa May’s efforts to push through a soft Brexit proposal that would see the UK remain within the single market and customs union.
According to Sam Coates of The Times, Downing Street has released the following statement: “This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work.”
The major resignations have piled pressure of Theresa May, whose party does not have a majority in the House of Commons. Many suspect that the chaos surrounding the UK’s Brexit plans could collapse the government and lead to another election.
