Fukushima’s profile boosting mascot given a rather unfortunate name…

A promotions company in the disaster-hit Japanese region of Fukushima has created a mascot designed to boost the area’s profile, but they’ve given it a rather unfortunate, and ironic, name.

A promotions company in the disaster-hit Japanese region of Fukushima has created a mascot designed to boost the area’s profile, but they’ve given it a rather unfortunate, and ironic, name.

The cheerful, wide-eyed mascot has been designed to boost the damaged area’s image and profile, while also boosting the spirits of the people still living in the Fukushima Prefecture. However, the mascot in question has been named: Fukuppy…

Talk about a major ‘f*ck-uppy’.

You can check out the mascot for yourself over on the Fukushima Industries Corp website. According to the South China Morning Post, “Fukuppy claims to have been born in a fridge in Fukushima Prefecture, is unsure whether it is male or female and is curious, kind and has ‘a strong sense of justice.’

“That’s what I think of myself, but people around me say that I’m a little bit stupid,” the flying egg says. “But I’m trying to be better.”

The mascot actually gets it’s name from the first three letters of ‘Fukushima’ along with the word ‘up’ and is supposed to create a sense of moving forward and positive progression in the wake of the world’s second worst nuclear disaster.

We haven’t seen a Japanese mascot cause this much confusion since the Matsumura Fishworks and Tamaribuchi Heavy Manufacturing Concern made Mr Sparkle…
