Glencullen wildfire leaves Dublin Mountains locals exhausted

Local resident talks about the 'terrifying' experience

The fire erupted the previous weekend and firefighters continued to tackle it over the bank holiday.

Speaking on Newstalk's Lunchtime Live, local resident Antoinette said the flames crept towards her home, with the blaze at one point burning down to the road and forcing road closures.

"The gorse all caught and it was just terrifying here, I even had firemen here at half four in the morning. It's been an awful few days for us with neighbours, absolutely terrified.

"Some had to get out of their homes." she added.

Antoinette said she had gone to bed on Sunday hoping for respite, only to be woken at 4am by a neighbour warning that the flames had grown again.

She praised the firefighters, who she said had battled the blaze constantly but had no access to bring their trucks up the hill, and described the toll of more than a week without sleep.

Her 90-year-old mother, she said, had packed a bag with her passport and will, ready to flee at short notice. For more on this story and other developments, stay with the latest Irish news.
