Government to meet today to finalise plans for Eighth Referendum

Varadkar direct provision

The Government will be putting the final details into the expected referendum this evening.

Leo Varadkar has said that while ministers are entitled to their own opinions on the matter, the Cabinet will take a collective position.

In a report by the Irish Examiner, the Taoiseach has ordered for a specially conviened meeting in the Government buildings today, and following that meeting he will outline the Government’s approach to the referendum.

This comes just two days after Varadkar said that he will campaign for more liberalised abortion laws in Ireland ahead of a referendum on the repeal of the Eighth Amendment.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4 in Davos, where Varadkar has been attending the World Economic Forum, the Taoiseach was asked if he will be campaigning for the abortion laws in Ireland to be relaxed.

“I’ll be campaigning for them to be changed and to be liberalised, yes,” Varadkar responded.

“We will have that referendum, hopefully in the summer and we should be in a position to make a decision on that in Government next week.”
