Here’s how much pure alcohol Irish people drink in a year

Carl Kinsella

Over 1000 Irish people die each year as a result of alcohol consumption, according to a new study by the Health Research Board.

The study also revealed that in 2014, Irish people drank 11 litres of pure alcohol. According to the Irish Times, this equates to 29 litres of vodka, 116 bottles of wine or 445 pints of beer.

The report argued that Ireland’s alcohol abuse problem is responsible for an entire 10% of the whole health budget.

As well causing three deaths per day, misuse of alcohol was also responsible for 17,000 hospital discharges in 2013.

This level of alcohol consumption means Ireland is home to the fourth heaviest drinkers in the OECD – behind only Estonia, France and Lithuania.

The report also revealed that one-in-three cases of self-harm in 2014 was related to alcohol, and alcohol was a factor in over 167,000 assaults.
