Galway’s answer to Dublin’s beloved Light House Cinema is about to throw open its doors to the public.

We recently brought you the news that the people behind Smithfield’s popular Light House Cinema – officially one of the coolest in the world, don’t you know – were developing a sister cinema on Merchant’s Road Lower in Galway.

Now comes the official word that the Pálás will open to the public this Friday 23 February, promising an eclectic mix of the best new Irish and international films along with classics, foreign language, animated films, shorts, documentaries, special events and festivals.

The opening weekend sees a clutch of Oscar-nominated films take centre stage, with Lady Bird, The Shape of Water and I, Tonya all set to light up the silver screen at the plush Tom de Paor-designed cinema.

“As with our sister cinema the Light House in Dublin, we fully believe Pálás will now be at the heart of the cultural life in the city,” said Element Pictures Director Andrew Lowe. “We look forward to getting to know our Galway audience and ensuring that a visit to Pálás is a unique experience.”
