A huge number of homes are without power due to Storm Eleanor

An estimated 27,000 homes and business are without power this morning as Storm Eleanor sweeps across the country bringing storm force winds and heavy rain.

Speaking on Morning Ireland, ESB Networks Operations Manager Derek Hynes said that 10,000 people in Mayo had been left without power overnight.

As many as 55,000 homes were without power at times on Tuesday but the ESB have managed to restore power in some areas.

There are also customers without power in Galway, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan.

Hynes said that the ESB hope to have power restored to all customers by Wednesday night.

An status orange weather alert was issued yesterday and was originally due to be in effect until 10pm on Tuesday, but Met Éireann have extended that warning until 2pm on Wednesday.

There’s also a status yellow wind warning in place for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford until 2pm on Wednesday.
