The trial of Irishman Ibrahim Halawa has been adjourned for the 16th time, meaning he was remain incarcerated beyond his 21st birthday. Ibrahim has been detained in Egypt for over three years.
Ibrahim, who is from Firhouse in Dublin, was arrested when he was 17 for protesting the ousting of the then-president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo. He is currently awaiting a mass trial, along with 493 others. The potential results of the mass trial are horrific, with charges that could result in life in prison or the death penalty.
Fiona Crowley, Research and Legal Manager with Amnesty International Ireland, has said "Today’s delay, the sixteenth, further prolongs Ibrahim’s horrific ordeal. The continuing imprisonment of this young Irish citizen is a violation of both international and Egyptian law."
The trial has been delayed due to the non appearance of a number of defendants, according to Ibrahim's solicitor Darragh Mackin. Ibrahim has now been detained for 1,181 days and now looks set to spend his 21st birthday imprisoned.
