Ice, ice, baby! Nationwide weather warning in place for the next 24 hours

Rory Cashin

We should be used to getting these by now.

Just a few hours since they issued their last weather warning for just four counties, Met Eireann have expanded upon it.

No longer will it just be Donegal, Leitrim, west Cavan and north Monaghan under the yellow weather warning, but the entire country.

As per the official statement, the status yellow snow and ice warning will bring with it a continued risk of scattered snow showers, with the showers being most frequent within Ulster and Connacht.

The warning is in place from this morning (Jan 18) to 12pm tomorrow (Jan 19) which does technically make it 26 hours… at which point we’ll probably receive another weather warning telling us to expect more snow and rain and wind and ice for the the foreseeable future.

As a reminder, the RSA has previously issued some safety tips when it comes to driving in the snow:

  • Use dipped headlights.
  • Slow down and leave extra space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front.
  • Use the highest gear possible but at a reduced speed.
  • Use a low gear when travelling downhill.
  • When slowing down, tap brakes lightly to alert those travelling behind.
  • Scan the road ahead at all times and ask yourself if you can stop safely at any time, if you can see properly and if you are clearly visible to others.
