The ban comes into effect next week.

Four Iarnród Éireann services from Dublin will no longer permit drinking alcohol on their trains following “persistent complaints” from passengers.

The ban will officially come into effect on Friday 12 October in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour on select trains from Dublin at the weekend.

The 11.25am, 1.25pm and 5.35pm Friday services from Dublin Heuston Station to Galway will be a strict no-alcohol zone, while a similar ban will affect the 2.45pm train to Westport.

The terms of the ban dictate that anybody who brings alcohol on-board will have it confiscated, while alcohol will not be sold for the duration of the journey.

Details of the alcohol ban will be clearly displayed at stations and customers booking online will be notified during the reservation process.

It follows related drinking bans that are already in effect on the 1.15pm and 3.10pm services from Heuston to Waterford on Fridays, and the 1pm train from Galway to Heuston and 12.40pm, 3.10pm and 6.05pm services from Waterford to Heuston on Sundays.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesperson said:

“The vast majority of customers who wish to enjoy an alcoholic beverage on-board our services do so without impacting in anyway on their fellow passengers, but unfortunately there is a minority that do over indulge, particularly those travelling in large groups, who can disrupt others in a negative way.

“There have been high volumes of complaints of such behaviour on these services so we have taken the decision to ban all alcohol from them.”
