The woman was the third person to die on Irish roads on Friday.

A woman in her 20s has died after she was hit by a car in Donegal on the evening of Friday, January 5, becoming the seventh person to die on Irish roads in 2024.

The incident, which occured on the N56 road at Illistrin, involved a car and a pedestrian. No other injuries were reported from the incident.

The woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was the third person to die on Irish roads on Friday, following a man in his 30s in Mayo and a woman in her 80s in Meath.

In a statement to JOE on Friday evening, An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently attending the scene of a fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the N56 Road at Illistrin, Co Donegal, this evening, Friday 5th January 2024.

“The collision involved a car and a pedestrian.

“The pedestrian, a woman aged in her 20s, has been pronounced deceased. Her body remains at the scene.

“No other injuries have been reported.

“The N56 road is currently closed between Letterkenny and Kilmacrennan with local diversions in place. A technical examination of the scene will take place tomorrow morning and the road will remain closed until then.

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N56 in the Illistrin area between 6:00pm and 7:15pm this evening are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.”

According to the Road Safety Authority (RSA), the number of road deaths in 2023 increased by 19% compared to 2022.

A total of 184 people died in 173 fatal collisions in 2023 compared to 155 deaths in 149 collisions in 2022, representing an increase of 29 deaths on Irish roads.
