An Irish tourist has been killed in Bolivia after a car overturned.
The man, reported to be in his 30s, was part of a group of seven traveling in a Toyota Landcruiser when the incident occurred Friday evening (June 27).
The group was en route to visit a local volcano when the accident happened. The car travelled 40 metres before eventually coming to a halt.
The man suffered an abdominal injury and was taken to the hospital; however, he died on the way there.
Five of the other occupants of the car were injured in the accident, including two Bolivian natives, two German natives and a Dutchman.
According to The Mirror, three of them were taken to a hospital in Potosi.
Local police have blamed speed as a potential reason for the accident.
Colonel Wilson Flores stated that one of the tourists had requested to drive the vehicle so they could record a video for social media.
"Unfortunately, due to excessive speed, it lost control and the vehicle turned over, causing one death and five injuries.
"The deceased passed away en route to Potosi due to the abdominal injury he suffered."
In a statement to Extra.ie, the Department of Foreign Affairs said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases."
