Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his 40s after an incident in Dublin city's Temple Bar area last weekend.
A Garda spokesperson has said that, shortly before 1am on Sunday (14 December), Gardaí responded to reports of a disturbance outside a licensed premises on Essex Street East, where a male was being restrained by security staff.
"Gardaí on foot patrol attended the scene and detained a man in his 40s. Gardaí subsequently sought assistance from a nearby ambulance crew as the male appeared unwell," the spokesperson added.
"The male was taken to St James’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased."
The Garda spokesperson also said that the coroner has been notified, and that a post-mortem examination has been carried out by the Office of the State Pathologist.
For operational reasons, the preliminary results of the post-mortem examination are not being released at this time.
The investigation into the death is being led by a Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) based at an incident room in Pearse Street Garda Station.
"The scene has been forensically examined, and local policing inquiries have been conducted. A Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) has been appointed," the spokesperson added.
"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Additionally, they are appealing to anyone with video footage—including dashcam footage—from Essex Street East between 12.30am and 1.30am on Sunday 14th December, 2025, to contact them.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on (01) 666 9000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station. Investigations are ongoing."
Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, is also examining the actions taken by An Garda Síochána in responding to the incident.
