Met Éireann issue update on snow/ice warning for Ireland

Snow warning

They’ve made a pretty big change.

Met Éireann has updated the Status Yellow snow-ice warning originally issued at 11am this morning (21 January). An update made at 7pm on Monday evening has changed the times that the warning will be in effect.

While the warning remains in place for the whole island, it appears that the snow and ice will not pose a threat until 11pm tonight — two hours later than the original forecast had predicted.

The bigger change is for Tuesday. While the snow and ice was originally expected to impact the country until 7pm, it now seems as though the warning will elapse as early as 11am on Tuesday morning (22 January).

Otherwise the substance of the warning remains the same: “Wintry showers overnight and on Tuesday morning with snow accumulations of 1 to 2 cm, especially in Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster and on hills and mountains. A few snow flurries possible at lower levels further south. Frost and icy patches.”

There is also an overnight warning in place for gale force winds: “West to northwest winds will occasionally reach gale force this evening and early tonight on coasts from Mizen Head to Erris Head to Malin Head and will become to confined to coasts from Mizen Head to Erris Head overnight.”
