Met Éireann says a ‘colder arctic airmass’ will hit Ireland this week

Temperatures are set to drop.

The mercury is set to drop in Ireland this week, with Met Éireann stating that a ‘colder arctic airmass’ will spread through Ireland by Thursday evening. This cold snap is expected to continue into the weekend as conditions turn cold, windy and showery.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however, because there are some bright and sunny conditions expected throughout the week as well.

In terms of the weekly forecast, here’s what’s expected.

Monday is set to be cold at first with mist patches lifting to leave a dry day with sunny spells and variable cloud. There is the chance of an isolated light shower in west Ulster.

Monday evening should be mainly dry with clear spells and just a few pockets of mist.

The dry conditions will continue into Tuesday with sunny spells in most areas. However, there will be more in the way of cloud in northern and western coastal counties. There’s also the chance of a few patches of rain, especially along the north coast.

It’s set to be mostly cloudy on Tuesday night with mist and areas of fog forming. It will be largely dry but there is the chance of the odd patch of light rain or drizzle developing.

Wednesday will be mainly cloudy with just occasional sunny intervals. Much of the country will be dry but there will be a few light showers about, mainly in northern counties.

As for Thursday, the morning will see a lot of cloud across the north and west with the chance of some patchy rain or drizzle. It will be largely dry further south and in the east with some sunny spells.

The mercury is set to drop on Thursday evening as a cold front will approach the northwest coast with rain becoming persistent in the north and west.

Met Éireann says: “The cold front and associated rainfall will then sweep southeastwards during the night introducing a much colder arctic airmass across the country. Any rain will clear quickly from the southeast early on Friday leaving a cold and windy day with sunny spells and widespread showers. The showers are likely to be heavy and bring the risk of hail and thunder, especially in coastal areas of the north and west.”

Reputable weather outlet Carlow Weather have also warned that these cold conditions should arrive by Thursday evening.
