The incident happened on 5 August.
Gardaí are investigating allegations made by a prisoner that he was sexually assaulted at Midlands Prison.
The story was initially reported by the Irish Daily Star this morning and stated that the prisoner had reported the sexual assault to prison officers and alleged that he’d been raped by up to six men.
A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service confirmed to JOE that while they don’t comment on individual cases, an allegation of sexual assault was made to them and that Gardaí are carrying out an investigation.
A Garda spokesperson told JOE that Gardaí are investigating an alleged sexual assault that occurred within a prison in the midlands that occurred on 5 August. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The incident reportedly happened in the section of the prison used to house inmates who have been convicted of serious sexual crimes.
