Ireland ranks in the Top 20… of ONE of these lists.

The Transparency International Organisation have released their corruption index for 2018, which ranks the world’s most corrupt countries, as well as the least corrupt.

The index ranks 180 countries around the world, and “it reveals that the continued failure of most countries to significantly control corruption is contributing to a crisis in democracy around the world. While there are exceptions, the data shows that despite some progress, most countries are failing to make serious inroads against corruption.”

According to the most recent index, these are the ten most corrupt countries in the world:

  1. Somalia
  2. Syria
  3. South Sudan
  4. Yemen
  5. North Korea
  6. Afghanistan
  7. Equatorial Guinea
  8. Guinea-Bissau
  9. Sudan
  10. Burundi

Based on a score out of 100, with a higher score indicating a lower amount of corruption, Ireland has scored 73 in 2018, dropping from a previous score of 75 back in 2018.

This places Ireland joint 18th in the world in terms of least corrupt, tied with Estonia and Japan.

The UK came in 11th, Australia in 13th, and USA in 22nd.

The index names the following ten countries as the least corrupt in the world:

  1. Denmark
  2. New Zealand
  3. Finland
  4. Singapore
  5. Sweden
  6. Switzerland
  7. Norway
  8. Netherlands
  9. Canada
  10. Luxembourg
