Good news for commuters.

Dublin looks set to get another train station as works were finally given the go-ahead for the station at Pelletstown on the Maynooth commuter line.

The development of a new train station in west Dublin has been welcomed by a group representing businesses in the capital.

Dublin Chamber said that the new station is important in serving the fast-growing suburb of Ashtown, where thousands of homes are currently being built.

Dublin Chamber’s Head of Public Affairs Graeme McQueen said: “These plans for a new station are exciting for north Dublin, particularly given the plans to electrify the Maynooth line over the coming years.

“Passenger numbers on the Maynooth line have grown significantly over the past 20 years. With many rush hour services at capacity on the Maynooth line, it is vital that a more frequent service is introduced as soon as possible.”

Discussion around the construction of the station in Pelletstown has been ongoing for 20 years, and it was finally given planning permission in 2014. However, due to financial concerns in Irish Rail, the construction has been delayed until now.

The new station is set to take two years to complete, at a cost of €6.5 million.
