A man who is reported to be an ex-employee at a New York hospital is said to have opened fire there, killing one doctor.

Several patients are also said to have been injured, with the majority of those said to be in a critical condition.

The incident is reported to have began around 2.55pm local time on Friday, in the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York.

Following the killing of the doctor and injuring six patients with what is said to have been a military-grade M16 assault rifle, Police Commissioner James O’Neill stated that the shooter attempted to set himself on fire before dying from a self-inflicted wound.

The gunman has not been officially named but US media stated that police sources have confirmed the name of the attacker.
