There’s your 2024 summer hols planned for you now.

Waterford has been getting heaps of praise as of late. Last month it was named the European City of Christmas, largely down to its annual Winterval festival, and the month before it joined Wexford on a Condé Nast Traveller list of Best Places in the UK and Ireland to visit in 2024.

Well, the Crystal County has just gotten another shoutout as a top place to visit, this time from The New York Times.

The established US publication created a list of the top 52 locations to visit this year, with Waterford city ranking as 30th; it was also the only Irish location to feature.

Of Waterford, New York Times writer AnneLise Sorensen praised the Munster city for its sparkling history and natural treasures.

Sorensen spoke of the city’s “cobblestone core” as well as its “less-ancient attractions” such as the recently opened Irish Wake Museum (otherwise known as the death museum) and the ever popular Irish Museum of Time.

The latter was one of six attractions shortlisted for the best tourism project in UK and Ireland award in 2022.

Waterford’s natural beauty also led to it making The New York Times’ list, with Sorensen focusing on its “towering cliffs and scalloped coves” by the Copper Coast.

Well, there you have it. Most people around the world reading the NYT will have to board a lengthy flight to enjoy Waterford’s charms; we should count ourselves lucky that it’s on our doorstep, with just a road-trip between us and the city’s natural beauty.

Coming first on the publication’s list of places to visit, meanwhile, was The Path of Totality in North America – with Paris in France, Yamaguchi in Japan, New Zealand (specifically via train) and Maui in Hawaii rounding out the top five.
