It has been reported that former Ukip leader Nigel Farage has endorsed a new pro-Brexit party and vowed to return to frontline politics if Britain doesn’t leave the EU on 29 March.

Farage left Ukip in December, saying he was uncomfortable with the direction the party had taken in recent months. Farage has never won a Westminster seat in seven attempts.

The Sun on Sunday have reported that the MEP was recently approached by former activists for Ukip who have applied to register the Brexit Party with the Electoral Commission.

Former Ukip economics spokeswoman Catherine Blaiklock has applied to register the new party and Farage is being touted as its possible leader.

“This was Catherine’s idea entirely – but she has done this with my full knowledge and my full support. If the Government goes back on its word and betrays the millions of people who voted for Brexit then we need a party prepared to stand up and fight for it,” he said.

Farage added that there would be a “huge public backlash” if Theresa May looked to extend Brexit beyond March.

“Theresa May is engaged in the betrayal of Brexit. The whole process has undergone a slow strangulation. We must start preparing for all eventualities now. I will step back into the fray and do it all again if I must but this time I will take no prisoners,” he said.

Ukip have responded to these reports by saying: “A new Brexit Party will split the pro-Brexit vote and damage any chance of unseating the LibLabCon anti-Brexit establishment at the next General Election. This is totally irresponsible.”
