An Garda Síochána confirmed the incident in a statement to JOE following a report in the Irish Mirror.

Sources told the paper that the off-duty Garda was stopped at a mandatory checkpoint in Clonmel early on Sunday morning where he failed the roadside breath test.

The outlet also said that it's understood the officer was more than four times over the legal limit.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told JOE that the Garda is stationed in the south of Ireland.

"That member was subsequently charged to a future sitting of Clonmel District Court."
