The officer is due to appear in court.

An off-duty Garda was arrested at the weekend in Tipperary on suspicion of drink driving.

An Garda Síochána confirmed the incident in a statement to JOE following a report in the Irish Mirror.

Sources told the paper that the off-duty Garda was stopped at a mandatory checkpoint in Clonmel early on Sunday morning where he failed the roadside breath test.

The outlet also said that it’s understood the officer was more than four times over the legal limit.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told JOE that the Garda is stationed in the south of Ireland.

They also said the officer has been charged and is due to appear in court.

“An Garda Siochana can confirm that an off-duty member of An Garda Síochána stationed in the Southern Region was arrested in Clonmel on Sunday morning 14/8/22 on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant,” the spokesperson stated.

“That member was subsequently charged to a future sitting of Clonmel District Court.”
