The jerseys came from none other than Harry Kane.

Actor, comedian and presenter Patrick Kielty has joked about barbecuing England football jerseys that were gifted to his two children.

The comments come during a major month for Kielty, which has already seen him make his rapturously received debut as host of The Late Late Show.

This week, meanwhile, will see the release in cinemas of comedy-drama Ballywalter, the movie which saw Kielty make his onscreen acting debut.

As reported in multiple outlets, the Northern Irish comedian explained at a tourism conference in Athlone on Monday (18 September) that when he and his family moved from Los Angeles to London, his wife Cat Deeley became friendly with the wife of England captain Harry Kane.

This is because Kielty’s two sons and Kane’s daughters went to the same school.

He said that before the UEFA European Championships in 2021, a package dropped through this letterbox from Kane, who had sent the comedian’s sons two brand new England strips with the footballer’s name on the back.

Alerted about the gift from Deeley, Kielty explained:

“At which point I am up in the spare room looking for gas and air. I was like: ‘Oh that’s great. That’s brilliant. I’ll be down. That’s grand,’ and your head is thinking: ‘What am I going to do here?’

“Then you catch yourself on and realise you have to get with the programme here. You’re living in England, your wife is English, your two kids are American so I put the two wee jerseys on them and put up a picture and sent it to their English grandparents.”

However, Kielty then joked that when his wife travelled to the US for work a few weeks later, the shirts “mysteriously disappeared”.

“I have no idea what went on there. I reckon someone must have broken into the children’s bedrooms in the dead of night and cut them up in the back garden and thrown them on the barbecue,” he quipped.

Kielty told the same anecdote on an episode of Alan Davies’ show As Yet Untitled earlier this year.
