Paul Mescal gives most Irish answer ever when asked about meeting King Charles

Stephen Porzio

The Maynooth man was asked about meeting King Charles at Gladiator II’s London premiere last week.

Recent JOE interviewee Paul Mescal truly is the man of the moment following his lead turn in the huge blockbuster Gladiator II.

And now he is going viral again for his particularly Irish response to a question he had put to him on the red carpet for his movie’s LA premiere yesterday (Monday, 18 November).

Variety asked the Maynooth man about meeting King Charles last week at Gladiator II’s London premiere.

“How wild was that?” the interviewer asked, to which Mescal replied with:

“It’s definitely not something that I thought was in the Bingo cards.

“I’m Irish, so it’s not on the list of priorities.”

Speaking about his Gladiator II director Ridley Scott, he added: “But it’s an amazing thing for Ridley because I know how important that is for him.

“So to see his film celebrated in that context was pretty special.”

Mescal was then asked what one says to the king, to which he said: “You just kind of nod along.

“I found it hard to hear what exactly [he] was saying… so you’re just kind of nodding along and just smiling.”

When JOE interviewed Mescal, we quizzed the Maynooth man on what he misses the most about Ireland when he is away, aside from friends and family.

And he had a great answer in response: that sarcastic Irish wit.

Mescal said:

“The kind of sensibility of the people. I think as a country, we’ve got a good sense of humour. We’ve got a healthy dose of sarcasm.

“I know it sounds like something small, but it’s actually important when you realise that that’s where you come from.

“Some other countries have that baked in but it’s nice to come back and feel like you have a shorthand with an entire population.”

Also during the conversation, we asked the Normal People star what his favourite pub or nightclub was during his Trinity College days.

“Dicey’s, €2 drinks on a Monday. I know, hell on Earth now,” he responded: “What are they now? I’ve heard they’ve gone up to €4.50.

“That was the spot on a Monday night. I actually didn’t drink a huge amount in college. I’ve caught up for it since,” he joked, before telling us he has only recently gotten into Guinness.

And in case Paul Mescal is reading this, Dicey’s website states that its Wild Monday Students Night currently offers €2.50 drinks on a Monday.

Gladiator II is in cinemas now.
