Police investigating ATM robbery in Down

Alan Loughnane

Belfast

It’s the second robbery of an ATM in two days.

An investigation is underway after a digger was used to take an ATM from a filling station in Down on Saturday morning.

Around 3am on Saturday morning, a number of men used a digger to remove an ATM from the filling station.

The digger is believed to have been taken from a location close to the filling station and was set on fire after the incident.

Part of the garage was also set alight and the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the blaze.

Both the garage and the digger were extensively damaged in the incident.

PSNI Detective Constable Martin said: “Enquiries are continuing and we are investigating a possible link between this incident and an ATM theft from the Ballymena Road, Antrim on Friday.

“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious in the area to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 170 2/2/19.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
