Proposals to ban cars and taxis from Dublin city centre

Major changes could be ahead

Joe Harrington

Major changes could be ahead.

Dublin City Council and the National Transport Authority have revealed new proposals which motorists and taxi drivers in Dublin won’t be too pleased about.

If the proposals are brought in, they would include a total ban on cars and taxis from College Green, no private cars allowed on Bachelor’s Walk and possibly George’s Quay.

They plan to service the car-free zones by bus, Luas, wider pedestrian streets and cycleways, and the whole idea is to get people using public transport, cycle and walk more.

They also plan to build a multi-storey facility at Heuston Station to encourage people to leave their cars there and use public transport for the rest of the journey.

The proposal will be up for public consultation from tomorrow until July 16.
