‘It’s not what you’re thinking’ – Rose of Tralee viewers surprised by German rose’s hobby

This led to Kathryn Thomas making a joke about her co-host Dáithí Ó Sé potentially trying the hobby himself.

During night two of this year’s Rose of Tralee festival, the German rose surprised viewers by professing her love of pole dancing.

Megan Wolf, 27, was born in the German city of Heidelberg but has Irish roots. Her mother is originally from Cork but moved to Germany after meeting the rose’s father while the pair were both in Crete in Greece.

Megan’s dad was there with the German navy while her mam was there in holidays, with the rose describing their meeting as “kind of like a Mamma Mia moment”.

With her family cheering her on from the crowd – wearing t-shirts reading: “I do not give a Schnitzel as long as Megan Wolf wins” – Megan took to the stage and discussed her love of politics and how she was just about to graduate from her political science graduate programme in university.

It was then though, the Rose of Tralee co-host Kathryn Thomas discussed with the German rose her love of pole dancing, asking if people are surprised when she tells them about the hobby.

In response, Megan said: “In Germany, they were. I started in Glasgow as an exchange student. It was very normal to do that.

“Then I came back to Germany and I got weird looks, to be honest. I had to explain: ‘Oh, it’s not what you’re thinking.’

“Even though it might come from sex work, for example, I got into it because its, for me at least, like defying gravity in a sense. Just challenging yourself.

“If you fall down, you just pick yourself up and keep going.”

This led to Thomas making a joke about her co-host Dáithí Ó Sé potentially taking to the pole himself.

“I did try guys, let me tell you, I did try and get a pole put in here and have Dáithí Ó Sé do it,” she quipped.

“But it was a step too far this year. Let me work on them for a year, okay and we’ll come back to it next year.”
