RTÉ’s birthday report on Leo Varadkar turning 40 is the funniest thing you’ll see all weekend

Leo Varadkar

Irish people at their very best. Love this.

This week has been a tumultuous one for Leo Varadkar as the Taoiseach and the Irish Government have to contend with the increasing uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

Aside from the usual jibes from Brexiteers, the Taoiseach has also faced some domestic backlash from farming groups and oppposition TDs following his remarks that he’s eating less meat in an effort to reduce his carbon footprint.

This being said, Varadkar has a reason to be cheerful because the Fine Gael leader celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday.

In an effort to gauge the public’s perception of the Taoiseach, RTÉ did a vox pop of people around Dublin – fittingly on Leo Street, Dublin 7 – and as you would expect, it was extremely colourful.

As you can see below, the first gentleman that’s interviewed is a fan of the Taoiseach and states that Varadkar is ‘alright’ and that he’s ‘trying his best, that’s all you can do.’ What happens after that interview though is a wonderful little moment when the camera dwells on the man for a second too long. All he can do is shrug to fill the silence.

‘Happy birthday to Leo, fair play to him,’ and ‘he just turned 40? I thought he was older,’ are just some of the more lighthearted comments made but some of the other people that were interviewed are not big fans of the Taoiseach.

“No birthday for him, up the nurses,” and the gentleman that actually had no idea who he was, before being made aware and expressing his views on the homeless crisis, are the most critical.

Take a look at 53 seconds of Irish people providing some TV gold.

Enjoy.
