“Someone else will take their seat.”

On Thursday, Ryanair announced that it is to end its long-standing practice of allowing passengers to take a 10kg piece of hand luggage for free, instead charging between €6 – €10 for the service from November.

From 1 November, a fee will be charged to passengers who wish to bring a second piece of hand luggage on a Ryanair flight, unless they are a priority boarding customer.

Under the new rules, passengers will still be allowed to take one “small personal bag” on board, to be placed under the seat in front.

The news has prompted an outcry on social media from customers, some of which claim they won’t fly with Ryanair again following the decision to charge for bringing a carry-on onto their flights.

But Ryanair believe that the move will not affect people using their flights in the future, despite what many people are claiming.

A Ryanair spokesperson told JOE: “Our flights are full of people who swear frequently they’ll never fly with us again, but keep coming back for the lowest fares and better punctuality than any other Irish airline.

“But we recognise it’s all about customer choice, so if customers want to choose higher fares and less punctual airlines, then so be it. Someone else will take their seat.”

The airline also claim that 60% of its customers will not be affected by the charges as 30% of them already buy priority boarding and another 30% travel with just one single small cabin bag.
