Scientists have discovered a reason why our eyes flicker when we sleep

It's not what we previously thought

It’s not what we previously thought…

A group of Israeli scientists have discovered the reason why our eyes flicker while we sleep… aside from being possessed by the devil that is.

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement sleep and the chances are you’ve heard of it before.

Previously it was thought to be caused by looking around during your dreams, but these scientists seemed to have proved that train of thought to be incorrect.

Other theories about it being connected to oxygen touching your cornea and your brain reacting to it also seem to be false also.

A new study in the scientific journal Nature Communications has said that these eye movements are actually caused by a scene in our dream changing.

That sounds like some inception sh*t going on in our heads lads…

By using electrodes (or witchcraft) to target specific parts of our brain, researchers found that the just after the sleeper’s eyes flickered under his eyelids, the part of the brain associated with processing a change in image or scene came to life.

The research was conducted over four years on 19 patients and the findings have left us to marvel at what goes on in our heads while we take our well-earned forty winks.

Hat-tip to The Independent.
