Shannon Airport’s gesture to struggling farmers is pure class

Alan Loughnane

Great to see…

Over 400 acres of silage is being cut in Shannon Airport this weekend to help out farmers who have been struggling with the recent fodder crisis.

The harvesting of what’s expected to be over 1,000 bales of silage began in Shannon Airport on Friday morning with the first loads leaving around midday on lorries.

The airport made a similar gesture back in 2013 when there were similar fodder shortages in the country.

The baling is due to continue over the weekend with the silage being transported to farms in Clare, Kerry and Tipperary.

Due to poor weather this spring, thousands of farmers have had to keep livestock indoors far longer than usual and as a result, they’re running low on available feed in the form of dried hay, silage or wheaten straw.
