Stephen Porzio

Hazardous driving conditions are expected.

A number of Status Yellow weather warnings have been issued for 10 counties on account of “very strong” winds.

It comes as Met Éireann extended the wind alert it put out on Tuesday, with it now publishing two warnings covering six counties.

One took effect at 1pm on Wednesday (6 April) and will be in place until later in the day at 9pm and applies to Clare, Galway, and Mayo.

Meanwhile, the other is for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo and also came into effect on Wednesday at 1pm but will remain until 6am on Thursday.

The warnings state that very strong southwest winds veering west to northwest have been forecasted and that winds will be strongest at the coast with some severe gusts and the possibility of wave overtopping.

Hazardous driving conditions are expected in exposed areas too.

On top of the alerts from Met Éireann, the UK Met Office has also issued a Yellow wind warning for Armagh, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone which will be in place from 8pm on Wednesday until 5am on Thursday.

“Strong winds overnight may bring a few travel impacts,” it reads.
